Influence and concept

The New World Amusement Park borrowed elements from other parks and exhibitions held in Singapore and overseas. Before the New World’s establishment, the Malaya Borneo Exhibition [1] was held in the colony in 1922, which was influential in the development of the New World. The exhibition was held in honour of the Prince of Wales’ visit to Malaya, and thus, great efforts were put in to plan this event. The exhibition attracted big crowds as its exhibits included many unique items, such as copra beetles and wild animals and birds from all parts of Malaya [2]. Meanwhile, external influences like Shanghai’s Great World and New World, established in 1912 and 1917 respectively influenced the layout of Singapore’s amusement parks with their multi-storied entertainment complexes [3]. The objective of these amusement parks was to provide a diversity of entertainment for the public at the lowest price possible [4], which was also incorporated into the business strategy for the New World.

Even though the New World was, in some ways, inspired by Shanghai’s amusement parks, it still possessed its distinct flavour. While those amusement parks in Shanghai were situated in the most bustling city districts, the New World was located at the suburbs of Jalan Besar, away from the Central Area. [5] Furthermore, the open-air concept, which remained permanent throughout its operation, was perfect for Singapore’s weather. Unlike Shanghai’s harsh climate, Singapore’s tropical weather provides a pleasant environment for outdoor night entertainment activities at New World [6]. Audiences could bask in the moonlight and enjoy the cool night breeze while enjoying performances in the alfresco park. Most importantly, the entertainment performances catered to the interests of their audience. Colonial Singapore had a multi-racial migrant society [7], resulting in the diverse cultural backgrounds of the patrons who visited the New World. The New World took this into account and put up a variety of entertainment performances to suit the taste of their audience.
